GREENVILLE – During the last city council meeting, Greenville Mayor Jeff Whitaker pushed to have the sales of recreational marijuana banned in the city limits.
“How can we have drug awareness and drug education in our school, but then let dispensaries in the city limits,” the mayor stated.
After being asked by a council member about also having education in school about the effects of abusing alcohol, Mayor Whitaker replied, “I can only base my thoughts and my opinion on the whole matter based upon personal experience… and it wasn’t pretty.”
The legislation was drafted and presented to council members, which got some pushback due to the financial benefit that would increase the city’s budget.
The issue was tabled for further review and discussion.
