Greenville Lady Wave open 2023 season with MVL win over Troy

TROY – The Lady Wave defeated the Troy Lady Trojans 4-2 in MVL action giving Greenville a 1-0 record to start the season after three washed out opening day games Saturday at Lady Wave Stadium.

The two Miami Valley League teams entered the night as the two best MVL teams from the 2022 season with Greenville winning the conference with a 17-1 league record and Troy a 16-2 conference mark to place second with the teams splitting their two game matchup. Greenville completed the season 26-6 while Troy finished 2022 with a 21-4 record.

“Great team win on the road against a good team,” said Greenville coach, Jerrod Newland. “Solid effort and proud of the kids.”

Greenville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth with Troy plating two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to lead 2-1 over the visiting Lady Wave.

Greenville plated two runs in the top of the fifth taking a 3-2 advantage and tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth to lead 4-2 with a score that would stand up for the final count.

“Went up and got down and came back,” Newland stated. “Hamm ropes one for a run with two outs.  Baughn gets double with two outs and Burke gets one in.

Lady Wave sophomore Zoey Burns went the distance on the mound allowing 3-hits, 1-walk, no earned runs while striking out five.

“Great hard fought game,” said Newland. “Zoey Burns went seven innings.”

Burns went 2-4 at the plate with an RBI, Skylar Fletcher was 2-3 with a walk, a RBI; Alaina Baughn 1-4 with a double, a RBI and a run scored; Addie Burke a double and a RBI; Kylie Hamm was 1-3 and a RBI; Ashlyn Zimmer had a double and a run scored; Haileigh McDermitt knocked a single, was hit by a pitch and scored a run.

“Offense had some clutch hits and great base running,” Newland said. “Troy is solid and will win lots of games again this year.”

“Big one here at the stadium,” Coach Newland added. “Excited for 2023 to get rolling.”

The Lady Wave hosts the Troy Lady Trojans today, Tuesday, March 28 with a 5 p.m. start time at Lady Wave Stadium.
