GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave defeated the visiting Xenia Lady Buccaneers 10-3 in Tuesday night MVL softball action at Stebbins Field.

“Great day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville coach, Jerrod Newland. “Come out here to the stadium and get a win, pass the bat a little bit, hit some stuff, make some plays.”

“Just getting rolling for the year and getting better,” Newland continued. “Everybody on this (lineup) card plays. Tonight I played 18-kids, so they get opportunities.”

The teams played to a 0-0 standoff after two-innings of play before the Lady Wave took advantage of a bases loaded clearing triple off the bat of senior shortstop Ashlyn Zimmer giving Greenville a 3-0 lead after three complete.

“We come up with a few clutch hits,” Newland said. “We have to get going a little quicker though. We left a few on today – bottom line Zim gets a few in there in the third to get us going. It gets a little contagious when you look at that board.”

The Lady Wave tacked on three fourth-inning runs to extend its lead to 6-0 with Xenia coming to the plate in the top of the fifth and pushed its lead to 8-0 after five-innings of action.

“I keep telling these young kids take advantage of what skillsets you have and make them better,” Newland said. “We give you an opportunity to go in and play and when you get that chance make the most of it and that’s what it’s all about. The next person up so when you get a chance make the most of it … we all know the Wally Pipp story so that’s a great one, but the thing is, when you get a chance make the most of it. I’m so excited for where these kids are moving forward.”

Xenia battled back with three runs in the top of the sixth-inning with Greenville plating two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-3 score that would hold up for the final score of the night.

“Xenia has four or five really neat players and they do a good job,” noted Coach Newland. “They have a good group.”

Greenville sophomore, Zoey Burns pitched six-inning of shutout ball to earn the win, allowing no run on three hits, two walks while striking out six.

“You can’t say enough about Zo in the mound tonight,” Newland stated. “Pitches six great shutout innings, does a great job and got out of a few jams.”
