GREENVILLE – The Lady Wave earned a 15-3 five-inning run-rule win over the visiting Bradford Lady Railroaders in non-conference Saturday afternoon softball action.
“Great day for Lady Wave softball here at the Stadium,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “A lot of people excited for the sun and the kids playing.”
“I keep trying to encourage the girls,” said Bradford coach Shon Shaffer, “and just keep getting after it.”
Bradford went down in order in the top of the first with Zoey Burns working the mound for the Lady Wave
Greenville took advantage of a Burns walk, a Kendall Cromwell RBI single, an Addie Burke runs scoring triple, and a passed ball plating a run giving the Lady Wave a 4-0 lead after one complete.
“We pitched and played some good defense and scratched a couple out there early and busted it open,” Newland stated. “It seemed we couldn’t clutch up and get that, they made the plays and a good ballgame.”
Burns set Bradford down in order in the top of the second bringing Greenville to the plate to score 3 runs to lead 7-0 after 2. The Lady Wave got a second-inning run scoring Kylar Arnett sacrifice fly, an RBI Mahayla Cook single, and a Cromwell RBI single to center.”
Bradford took advantage of a Greenville pitching change to plate 3 third inning runs. Vivian Harlemen collected a sacrifice RBI, Chloe Hocker knocked an RBI single and Lex Clark slammed a run-scoring double to right for a 7-3 score bringing Burns back to the mound to get the final out of the inning.
Lilly Brubaker hit a 2-out single to right in the bottom of the third, Arnett took a walk, Greenville pushed a run across with the aid of a Bradford error, a Cook Walk followed by an Ella McLear 3-run base clearing double giving the home team an 11-3 lead with three innings in the book.
“I think they’ll get there but it’s a long process,” Shaffer said. “We held our own for three or four innings with Greenville and that is a really good program with fast-playing girls.”
Morgan Thompson took the mound for the Lady Wave fourth setting the Lady Roaders down in order.
Greenville plated 4 runs in the bottom of the fourth taking advantage of 3 Bradford errors, an Arnett RBI single, and a wild pitch to lead 15-3 after 4 innings of play.
“We get ourselves in situations where we are just not playing fast enough and then we just mess up, make errors,” said Shaffer. “It’s rough with this many young players.”
“Last two innings they were beating the door down there the third and fourth time through,” Coach Newland said of the Lady Wave hitting.
The Lady Railroaders went quietly in the top of the fifth giving the Lady Wave win.
Burns picked up the win for the Lady Wave going 2.1 innings allowing no earned runs, 2 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. Thompson picked up the save throwing 2.0 innings of no-hit ball, no walks, and 2 strikeouts.
