GREENVILLE – The Greenville JV boys basketball team defeated the visiting West Carrollton Pirates 51-29 in MVL action following a 43-17 Greenville freshman team win.

“We played well,” said Greenville JV coach Jim Gable. “West Carrollton beat us by 25 last year, so we looked a lot better this year.”

Greenville got balanced scoring, with nine players in the scoring column, and Coach Gable went to his bench in the fourth to close the game with freshman players.

We needed a win where we could get everybody in,” Gable stated. “We have been playing really good basketball the last four games. We would get up in our first three games and then lose the lead. At Troy, we lost on a last-second shot, and now we have won three in a row.”

“We’re playing a lot better,” Gable added. “We have a good lineup in there; Cullen Schmidt is helping us as a freshman moving up now, so it was a good win for us.”

Greenville won the first two-quarters of the night, sending the teams to the break with the Wave holding a 21-10 advantage.

Greenville put the game away in the third period, outscoring the visiting Pirates 23-6, with Ji Ji Jim scoring eight points, Michael McMahon five points including a 3-pointer, Isaac Kerg four points, and Ethan Flatter and Cullen Schmidt two points each, giving the Wave a 44-16 advantage.

With the game well in hand, Coach Gable went to his bench to close out the game in the fourth.

“It was good to get the freshmen in,” Gable noted. “The pressure was a little tougher on them, but I thought Brody Baumann played well, Louie Powers gave a good effort, and Cullen Schmitz does a good job when he’s in.”

“Our guards did well; Michael McMahon had a big game,” Gable continued. “Ji Ji and Ethan Flatter are the guys in most of the game. I had three quarters apiece for Isaac Kerg and Michael McMahon, so our guards are really good, really experienced, and then you throw in a 6’5” kid (Schmidt), they’re a pretty good team.”

Greenville dominated the boards at both ends of the court, bringing praise from Coach Gable.

“Cullen did a nice job rebounding,” Gable said. “Titus Eberwein does a good job for being undersized, and then Steven (Hines) and Devin (Wherley) came off the bench. Our big guy, Landon Noble, was out; he had surgery today. He goes in and plays hard and gets a couple of baskets and a lot of rebounds.”
