TIPP CITY – The Greenville Lady Wave handed Tippecanoe its first Miami Valley League loss of the season Monday, rolling to a 17-1 five-inning run-rule win over the Lady Red Devils on their home field.
“Great day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “Awesome to get a road win over a nice Tipp City team. Getting them their first MVL loss.”
Greenville wasted no time taking control.
The Lady Wave struck for five runs in the top of the first inning. Leah Force led off with a single, Lillie Shaffer reached after being hit by a pitch, and Kendall Cromwell delivered a two-out RBI single to right. Rielynn Davidson followed with a single to left, Kara Blumenstock added a run-scoring single, and Greenville scored two more runs on a Tippecanoe error before Lily Brubaker capped the inning with an RBI single to right for a 5-0 lead.
“Made some nice plays and played fast big first inning,” said Newland. “Blumenstock had a huge first-inning hit to bust it open.”
Tippecanoe answered with its only run in the bottom of the first to make it 5-1, but Greenville quickly put the game out of reach.
The Lady Wave exploded for nine runs in the second inning. Lizzie Shaffer doubled home a run, Jordyn McMullen added a sacrifice fly, Cromwell singled in a run, Davidson tripled home another, Blumenstock singled in one, Leah Force delivered a two-run single, and Ella Oswalt doubled in two more as Greenville stretched its advantage to 14-1.
Oswalt kept the Lady Red Devils quiet in the circle, striking out the side swinging in the bottom of the second.
Greenville added two more runs in the third. Davidson, Blumenstock, and Brubaker each singled with one out, and Riley Pfledderer followed with a sacrifice fly. A second run scored on an error on the same play, giving the Lady Wave a commanding 16-1 lead.
“Kids hit the ball very square and solid,” Newland said. “Excited for the kids and the program.”
McMullen put the finishing touch on the win in the top of the fifth, blasting a solo home run to center field for Greenville’s 17th run of the game.
Oswalt earned the win for Greenville, allowing one run on five hits over five innings while striking out nine and walking none.
“Ella and Jordyn did great tonight on the mound and at the plate,” Newland said. “Excited for the kids and the program.”
Greenville pounded out 18 hits in the win and played flawless defense without committing an error.
Blumenstock, hitting in the No. 7 spot, drove in three runs and went 3-for-3 at the plate. Blumenstock, Cromwell, Davidson, and Force each collected three hits. Brubaker and Oswalt added two hits apiece.
With the win, Greenville improved to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in Miami Valley League play. Tippecanoe fell to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in the MVL.
The Lady Wave will host the Lady Red Devils on Wednesday, April 14, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
