GREENVILLE – The Greenville Girls Softball Association (GGSA) held its 53rd opening day ceremonies Saturday, after postponing the event for a week due to rains that covered the entire weekend as originally planned.

“I’m surprised that we have as many as were able to come, which is amazing,” said GGSA President Cindy Rose. “It’s a beautiful day. We did our fundraiser winners last week and our meals last week.”

Jim Buchy and John Hess were named GGSA Honorary Trustees and threw out the first pitches of the 2025 Greenville Girls Softball Association’s new season. Greenville American Legion Post 140 Color Guard presented the Colors, and Emily McLear sang the National Anthem.

GGSA has more than 230 registered girls for the 2025 season, making up 17 teams.

Rec ball is still alive in Greenville,” said Rose. “It’s a lot of hard work by everyone … and the new playground is coming in June.”

The successful GGSA organization is due to the many player, parents, coaches, officer and supporters of the organization over the past 50 years with many thousands of people selling fundraisers, running the concession stand, coaching bases and the dedication of many thankless hours of their time behind the scenes giving the young ladies of Greenville and beyond a positive softball experience.

“We had a few girls miss out today, but it’s a long season, and typically when we cancel on Saturday, we are able to have it on Sunday,” Rose stated. “This is the first time we have tried to do it a week later, so we went for it, and it is a beautiful day.”
