GREENVILLE – The Green Wave dropped a 9-0 non-conference game to the visiting Coldwater Cavaliers in Wednesday night baseball action.

“Their guy threw strikes and they did some things out in the field – they play good defense,” said Greenville coach, Adam Eberwein. “They turned a pretty quick double play. You don’t see a whole lot of those coming from third base…your 5-4-3 double play and obviously you have to have the arms to do that and they put the ball in play too.”

Coldwater entered the game as the state’s No. 4 ranked D-III OHSAA baseball team and took home the win in a complete seven-inning game.

“If you’re not matching what they’re doing it’s going to be a pretty tough game,” Eberwein noted. “We got some guys in scoring position and that has been our issue in the past five or six games, we just cannot get runners in when we have guys in scoring position.”

The Cavaliers took advantage of a first-inning unearned run to lead 1-0 over Greenville. The teams played scoreless in inning No. 2 with the visitors tacking on a single run in the top of the third to lead 2-0 after three complete. Greenville junior, Bryce Blumenstock pitched the opening three-innings for the Wave.

“Bryce come out and pitched a nice three-innings,” Eberwein stated. “We’re trying to keep his pitch count down a little bit for league games on Monday.”

The teams played to a scoreless the fourth-inning with Coldwater plating a run in the top of the fifth moving out to a 3-0 advantage with five-innings in the book.

“We gave Brock Short some time on the mound,” said Coach Eberwein. “He was up playing the North South Football game and missed some time.” and we’re battling some late season fatigue with some of our pitching staff because our pitching staff is light compared to what it should be and those are the things unfortunately you have to deal with, with the schedules that we play.”

Coldwater tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth and seventh-innings to earn the win.

“We just didn’t have those timely hits and that’s been the scenario so far the second half of the season,” Eberwein said. “I don’t know how many times we’ve had a leadoff double and he gets stranded on second or third. We just can’t get the guy in. Until we get that fixed it’s where it’s been.”

“We’re battling some late season fatigue with some of our pitching staff because we are light compared to what it should be,” Eberwein added. “Those are the things unfortunately you have to deal with, with the schedules that we play.”

With the win Coldwater improves to 15-2 on the season while Greenville falls to 5-11 on the year.
