GREENVILLE – The Piqua Indians downed Greenville 47-46 in an overtime MVL Friday night varsity boys basketball game played on the Green Wave’s home court.
“There’s only one way to respond,” said Greenville coach Matt Hamilton following the game. “Come in tomorrow night and fight.”
Piqua opened the game on a 4-0 run, followed by 11 unanswered Greenville points, giving the Wave an 11-4 lead midway through the opening quarter, with the teams settling on a 12-7 Greenville lead after one period of play.

The Indians took the second quarter 11-10, sending the teams to the break with the Green Wave holding a four-point 22-18 advantage.
“We let things get in our heads in that first half that were out of our control, but we let it get to us,” said Hamilton. “We had key guys that weren’t factors because of it, especially the first half we didn’t play well.”
Five Piqua third-quarter 3-pointers and a 2-point basket good for 17 points gave the visitors a 35-26 lead after three complete with the Indians’ defense limiting Greenville to four points.
Greenville’s offense got back on track in the fourth, taking advantage of 10 Drew Hamilton points, including two triples, two David Conway driving layups, Owen Mcgreevey’s 3-4 at the charity stripe, and Liam Jasenski knocking down a free throw to outpace Piqua 18-9 sending the game to overtime tied 44-44.

With the overtime score standing at 46-46 and time winding down, a foul on a missed Piqua layup with time expiring sent the Indians to the line with 0:00 on the clock to knock down the first free throw, giving Piqua the one-point overtime win.
“I told them I’m on the fence right now,” Hamilton said. “I don’t know whether to be incredibly mad at them or incredibly proud of them. “They never stop, they fight back, but we shouldn’t have been in that situation.”
Hamilton led Greenville and all scorers with a game-high 16 points.
