I must say I had a lot of thinking about what to do this past weekend. Do I attend or not attend the Rossburg Ice Cream Social?
Of course, my son Jamie wanted to go because, like my older siblings and I, we used to attend it all of the time. I don’t ever remember missing one. So much fun!
Because of my current mobility issues, I decided I would take part in the event if I got a good parking spot. If not, I would drop Jamie off and would come back up after him at a later time, a few hours later.
Well, lo and behold, I immediately got a parking space close by so I wouldn’t need a cane or walker to get by….just Jamie, who is serving as my crutch/cane during this time. He has been a good sport about it.
I had my camera, notebook, pen and a pocketbook and headed for the fire department where all of the action took place. Things went well for the two of us. I sat most of the time but tried to get some pictures.
At this age, I am too proud to use a walker or cane in public because I don’t want to appear impaired, even though I do have issues. However, I have been taking steps to figure out how to control my pain and hopefully one day regain the use of my legs and feet back to 100 percent.
I’m glad I decided to stay on Saturday because I ran into old friends and made new ones.
We saw and chatted with relatives and classmates, catching up with one another.
This event is family. That’s what makes it even more fun.
I thank Fire Chief Rob Widener and his crew for making this a fun event, which has been taking place for 68 years. Many firefighters, their wives and others are to be commended. More about this event will appear on My County Link this week.
There are many more festivals set for Darke County in the near future and I hope they turn out great, just like the Rossburg Ice Cream Social did.

I just learned that Austin Matthew Forney, son of Matt and Lisa Forney, graduated Magna Cum Laude on May 25 from Dublin Jerome High School, Dublin, Ohio. Matt is the son of Robin Hesson of Union City, Ind. Congratulations!
