DARKE COUNTY – The Fort Jefferson United Methodist Church will host a video series, “We Served,” from local producer Diana L. Spitler. The documentary focuses on interviews and letters written by a dozen veterans from her family.
These men served in 4 major branches of the military after World War II. This was not a project about wars or battles. It is a personal testimony directly from the men who enlisted to serve during times of war or during peace. It is about training, mishaps, experiences and their viewpoints. You’ll learn what it’s like to be stationed on a ship or deployed overseas or receive electronics instruction or keep airplanes flying–all to fulfill the mission.
Spitler is from Darke County and has produced other documentaries, including “World War II on an LST,” LST + DUKW,” “Write When You Can,” and “Open Doors to Freedom.”
“Open Doors to Freedom” was a commercial promoting USS LST 325 located in Evansville, Indiana. This presentation was viewed by French officials when they were considering the expense of taking that ship back to the Normandy beaches for the D-Day 70th Anniversary celebration in 2014. This was Spitler’s biggest claim to fame. She created “We Served” to keep veterans in focus because she “knows God wants His people to remember His warriors.”
The five-part series (#1 enlistment, #2 training, #3 active duty, #4 memories and #5 discharge) will be shown every Sunday in November at 2:00 p.m. at Ft.
