TROY – Fire crews in Miami County responded to a reported structure fire at the Overfield Tavern Museum in Troy early Saturday morning.
According to fire officials, the interior of the historical tavern has been completely gutted, but the exterior walls looked to remain intact.
The cause of the fire has not yet been reported.
In 1808 Benjamin Overfield opened a tavern on the bank of the Great Miami River. The tavern soon became the center of the town’s social and civic life.
After its initial restoration in 1948, the Overfield Tavern served as a gathering place for the Hobart family and guests of the family-owned enterprise, Hobart Brothers Company. In 1965, the Troy Historical Society was founded and began using the building as a museum.
