MARIA STEIN – Thick black smoke could be seen for miles after a Catholic Church in Maria Stein erupted into flames on Thursday afternoon.
Fire crews responded at approximately 3 pm after construction workers could feel the heat under their feet. When crews arrived on the scene, flames were coming through the roof at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on SR 119.
Nobody was inside the church at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire and the extent of damage are not known at this time.
