PIQUA – The Piqua Fire Department recently added a new utility terrain vehicle (UTV) to its fleet.

The new UTV, a 2025 Polaris Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar Edition, was purchased with a donation from the UVMC Community Benefits Fund. The total cost was $41,400, which was fully covered by the donation.

City of Piqua Assistant Fire Chief Kris Black said the new vehicle offers the community increased emergency response options.

“We’re thankful for the donation through the UVMC Community Benefits Fund for making this resource possible for our community. The UTV creates more flexibility for first response scenarios,” Black said. “It will likely be a first response vehicle to rural, remote, or riverway areas.”

“The ability to respond quickly and effectively in an emergency is crucial,” said Kevin Harlan, system president of Atrium Medical Center and Upper Valley Medical Center. “Having the right equipment makes all the difference in saving lives. The addition of this new UTV ensures that the Piqua Fire Department can better serve the community, especially in challenging and remote locations.”

The new vehicle is equipped with an AED, an automated external defibrillator, and has been fitted with a custom rescue skid. The rescue skid, mounted in the bed of the UTV, provides a backboard for patients, a safe place for emergency medical service (EMS) providers to ride, and an EMS supply drawer. The UTV is safe for road and off-road travel, and its versatility makes it an invaluable first response asset.

“While the old UTV served the community well for over 20 years, the safety features and modern capabilities of the new UTV enhance our ability to respond in hard-to-reach areas,” Fire Chief Lee Adams said.
