GREENVILLE – Greenville’s First Team All-Ohio sophomore pitcher Ella Oswalt was perfect Thursday night, facing 15 West Carrollton Lady Pirates and striking out all 15 in the Lady Wave’s 15-0 five-inning run-rule Miami Valley League win at Stebbins Field.
“Great day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville coach Jerrod Newland. “Fun day for the program.”
Oswalt went about her business in the circle, never allowing a baserunner while the Greenville offense backed her with a big night at the plate. Despite a strong wind blowing in and keeping most balls in play, Oswalt crushed two home runs in the second inning, including a grand slam, driving in six runs in the inning and giving her a league-leading eight home runs on the season.
“Ella — great job,” said Newland. “Went out and attacked them good. I said today before the game, the ball would not leave the field, and she knocked two out of here. The first one was never more than 20 feet off the ground, and the second one went over the fence by a boatload. Way to hit the ball and be a leader.”
Greenville got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after a West Carrollton error, a Jordyn McMullen single down the left-field line, a Lily Brubaker single to center field, and a Riley Thomas sacrifice fly each brought home a run.
The Lady Wave broke the game open with nine runs on seven hits in the bottom of the second. Oswalt homered to center field for two runs, Brubaker singled in a run, Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk, Zwiesler singled in a run, and Oswalt later launched a grand slam to center field.
With the game in hand, Newland went deep into his bench and used base-running outs to keep the game respectable while giving players opportunities.
“A lot of opportunities for kids to play,” said Newland. “You surround the circle, and today we had a chance to get some kids some opportunities to play. We had four or five kids running to school functions, so I had 19 in that game. Everybody is playing who is healthy and excited for where we’re at. Good opportunities ahead. Kids are playing spots they never played and getting opportunities, and that’s what it’s all about — take your opportunities and run.”
Greenville collected 11 hits and seven walks in the win. Brubaker, McMullen, Oswalt and Leah Force each had two hits. Kara Blumenstock and Alexis Yundt led the Lady Wave with two walks each.
Greenville freshman Kai Swisshelm also collected her first career varsity hit.
“First varsity hit for Kai,” Newland said. “Comes up there and she works hard and gets a chance and hits the ball hard. Hitting is her strength. Opportunities are there, and that’s why we work hard.”
The Lady Wave played error-free defense behind Oswalt to secure the conference victory.
Greenville’s junior varsity team also wrapped up a strong 2026 season, finishing 16-2 under first-year coach Morgan Gilbert.
“JV finishes the season 16-2, getting in 18 great games for them,” said Newland. “It was awesome this year, them and Morgan Gilbert getting that going. Just proud of that.”
