DARKE COUNTY – July at the Darke County Senior Center offers some familiar events, as well as new events. A complete schedule of upcoming events with the RSVP date typed in bold print is listed at the bottom of this article. There are many events requiring registration in the first two weeks of July. To get an advanced preview of what is coming to the center, you can visit the Darke County Senior Center or visit the Facebook page for detailed information and updates on events, which include fun photos of past events.
The DCS office is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Birchwood Senior Center, 5844 Jaysville-St. Johns Rd, Greenville. Anyone 55 and older with a valid membership is welcome to attend events. One may register for events either in person at the center or by calling or texting (937) 794-2556. Stop by to say hello, pick up an event calendar, purchase America 250 quilt raffle tickets, sign up for activities, or join or renew your membership. Raffle tickets offer a chance to win a beautiful handmade queen-size quilt, measuring 72 x 72, now on display at the DCS Center.
Events requiring an RSVP by July 1st through 9th with descriptions are as follows:
RSVP by 7/1 for Beginner Crochet Classes with Beth Hargest. These free classes will be held Tuesday, July 7, 14 & 21 from 11:30 am -12:30 pm. Those who attend will learn the basics of crochet, how to chain, single crochet and double crochet, and how to read patterns. At the last class participants will begin simple project which they can complete on their own.
RSVP by 7/2 for “Healthy Feet, Preventing Falls,” a free foot-care program presented by Dr. Rob Maher of Western Ohio Podiatric Medical Center on Thursday, July 9 at 1 pm. Attendees will learn why foot care is important and how it can help prevent falls. Dr. Maher will discuss common senior foot concerns, including plantar fasciitis, arthritis, joint pain, bunions, and hammertoes, along with toenail care, diabetic foot care, neuropathy, fall prevention, shoe selection, and when to see a podiatrist.
RSVP asap for Senior Soothe Me, held Friday, July 10, from 11:30 am-2 pm. Participants must prepay $10 for a 15-minute session and reserve a specific time. This month, two providers will offer chair massages, which focus on relieving tension and muscle pain in the neck, shoulders, and back while improving circulation.
RSVP by 7/6 for Property Tax Levy: Pros and Cons, held Monday, July 13 from 1:00–3:00 pm. Ed Maloof, AXOHTAX Zone 4 Regional Captain, will explain AXOHTAX and its effort to abolish property taxes in Ohio, with Brian Massie and Leonard Gilbert also presenting. Christie Eley will share the opposing perspective. This nonpartisan, informational program is not a debate and will include time for questions during the presentation, with presenters available afterward for one-on-one conversations.
RSVP by 7/9 for a Terra Cotta Pot Bee Bath craft event on Thursday, July 16 at 1:00 pm. Pam Idle of JAG Healthcare in Union City, Ohio, will guide crafters in making a small bee bath that provides bees a safe place to land while they drink water and pollinate. Hand-painted bonnets decorate the base of this pollinator water station.

Darke County Seniors (DCS) will participate in the America 250 Celebration at Greenville City Park on Sunday, July 5, from 1:00–4:00 pm.
The City of Greenville has activities and musical performances planned throughout the afternoon, and DCS is pleased to be part of the event. Look for our canopy near the concession stand, where we will offer tables and chairs for resting, free lemonade and tea, and rub-on tattoos for kids. Line dancing will take place in the street in front of the canopy around 1:00 pm.
