December events at the Darke County Senior Center

DARKE COUNTY – ‘Tis the Season and the DC Seniors December calendar is filled with festive and engaging events.

Straight out of the gate, there is “Painting Ornaments with Leo,” scheduled for Tuesday, December 2nd at 11:30 am. This event is complimentary; however, advanced RSVP is required by November 25th. Please confirm your participation by calling or texting Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565.

Another festive event is offered on Thursday, December 4th. You can be part of the caravan that will travel to Carillon Park for their Christmas lights. Those who can drive are asked to offer space in their vehicle for additional participants. Those who require transportation assistance should contact Wally or Mary.

We will leave Birchwood Center at 3:30 pm. Gate admission for seniors is $12. You may want to bring a few extra dollars for the optional train ride ($5) and optional snacks, beverages, or a complete meal ($15-20). We will take a group photo. If you want to be included, please be at the park entrance at 5:00 pm.

You won’t want to miss the fun and excitement of our second annual cookie exchange. This year is even Bigger and Better! To participate, please bring three dozen of your signature holiday cookies. Arrive ready for fun. Chat, socialize, and enjoy sampling cookies while playing a special trivia bingo game. When the afternoon is over, don’t forget to swap cookies, taking a couple of dozen home.

For all who are interested, there will be Christmas Caroling on Tuesday, December 9th, from 11:30 am – 2:30 pm at three Greenville nursing facilities. Santa and Mrs. Claus will join us in singing and giving each resident a small gift. We will meet at Oakley Place (1275 Northview Dr) at 11:30 pm, then continue to Brookdale Assisted Living (1401 N Broadway) and finish at Village Green (1315 KitchenAid Way).

As you begin to embrace the Christmas season, you may suddenly realize you forgot to buy snacks for your family and friends—for nibbling between meals, during meals, and while watching football…lots of football. Fortunately, the DC Seniors have it covered are rather, Tina McGillvary from the OSU Extension has you covered with tips on preparing a Holiday Charcuterie Board. Join Tina on Thursday, December 11th, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

Got time and room for one more decoration? Well, make it a snowman so you can keep it up long after the tree and lights are put away. Come to the Tin Can Snowman crafting class held on Thursday, December 18th, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm to make your very own “Frosty” from tin cans. (Donation) Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP by 12/11*.

And so, the holidays don’t weigh us down; there are many activities to lighten and enlighten the body and spirit.

There’s Refit every Monday and Friday from 10:30 – 11:45 am, Chair Yoga every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 – 11:15 am, and Beginner Tai Chi classes will be conducted every Monday, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, except 12/29. This Tai Chi class is an exercise performed as gentle, low-impact movement in which practitioners perform a series of deliberate, flowing motions while focusing on deep, slow breaths. Tai Chi aims to cultivate and balance the body’s energy, thereby promoting both mental and physical well-being. (Participation in this series is required prior to enrolling in Tai Chi 2).

Please be aware that the Center will not be open from December 24th through 28th for Christmas and will close again on December 31st for the New Year holiday.

Another “Senior Soothe Me” day is scheduled for Friday, December 12th. Starting at 11:45 am until 2:00 pm, Joe Bush will offer 15-minute chair massages by reservation for $10. And Lori Osterloh-Hagaman will be doing foot reflexology.

To reserve a time slot for the “Senior Soothe Me,” sign the sheet at the center or contact Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565. Act fast to get your time scheduled.
