PREBLE COUNTY – On June 24th at approximately 8:15 P.M., deputies were requested to respond to the Petro Truck Stop at 9787 US 40 West by the Wayne County, Indiana, Sheriff’s Office to assist in locating a driver involved in a suspected fatal crash. The crash occurred on the entrance ramp to IS 70 West from US 40 at the state line.
The male driver was located at the truck stop and during his interaction with deputies, he told deputies that he had killed a female who was in his truck while at the Petro truck stop.
PCSO deputies arrived and, based on this information, the male subject was detained. During this time, the male resisted. The male subject damaged a PCSO cruiser and was eventually transported by ambulance to Kettering Preble ER for treatment.
Wayne County investigators found a female victim in the truck at the original crash scene. She was transported by ambulance to Reid Hospital in Richmond, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators from both Sheriff’s Offices remained on scene conducting their investigations. A search warrant was obtained in Wayne County to process the semi-truck / trailer that was involved in this incident.
The female victim was transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy was conducted today. Investigators are in the process of formally identifying her and making contact with next of kin.
The male suspect remains in the Preble County Jail. His identity is being held until formal charges are filed.
This case remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Offices in Wayne and Preble Counties.
