DC Seniors prepare for the new year

DARKE COUNTY – Members involved with the Birchwood Senior Center wish a healthy and happy holiday season to everyone.

The center will be closed December 24th – 28th, reopening on December 29th at 10:30 with Refit, followed by a special Line Dancing class from noon – 3:00 pm. Tuesday, December 30th will include chair yoga at 10:30 am and game day from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Then the center will be closed on Wednesday, December 31st until January 5th of the new year.

January 5th starts with Refit and a special free craft event from 11:30 – 12:30 pm. Annie Kuebel will be demonstrating and assisting those in attendance on how to knit their very own scarf without needles. These scarves can be any width or length. The class will be free, fun, limited in size, and include refreshments. Those interested need only bring a skein of medium-weight yarn (since bulky yarn does not work well), and RSVP by calling or texting Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565.

“Tai Chi 1 Beginner” is being offered every Monday from 1 – 2:00 pm for 10 weeks (January 5 – March 9). This is a beginner class taught by Tina McGillvary, of OSU Darke County Extension Office. The name has been changed for greater clarity. The class will be beginner-friendly and offer step-by-step instruction. Those who took Tai Chi Beginner for the past 2 months learned the first six basic moves and can now advance to “Tai Chi 1 Advanced,” or they can always repeat the Beginner class. But those new to Tai Chi will need to start with the Monday class.

“Tai Chi 1 Advanced” will be taught by Lauren Henry of Wayne Healthcare on Thursdays from 3:30 – 5:00 pm. This 10-week class teaches six advanced moves, building on the first six basic moves. Familiarity with the initial six moves is required before enrolling.

Tai Chi is a popular exercise for arthritis management or fall prevention because it enhances balance and coordination, improves joint flexibility and muscle strength, promotes relaxation and stress relief, and supports fall prevention strategies. Each class is limited to 15 participants. There is no fixed fee; however, donations are welcome. To register, please contact Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565 via call or text. Please note that new members will not be accepted after the third week.

A new event is the Senior Citizens Walking Club. Those interested will meet at the Greenville High School (100 Greenwave Way) at 6:00 pm inside the main entrance of the building. The club will meet every Monday through March 16th. There is no cost.
