DARKE COUNTY – Darke County Seniors’ sponsor of the month is Oakland Church of the Brethren, which generously donated a $20 Chamber of Commerce “Chamber Bucks” gift card. Congratulations to Steve Willman for being the lucky recipient. Oakland Church of the Brethren also provided the refreshments during the organization’s monthly membership meeting, which was held on February 4th.
Darke County Senior membership meetings are held at 3:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. All members are invited and encouraged to attend. Meeting agendas include discussions of past and upcoming events, suggestions for future programs, volunteer opportunities, and member input.
Paramedic Karl Kleinekatheofer of Spirit Medical Transport recently conducted a class aimed at enhancing awareness of the signs and symptoms associated with heart attack and stroke. The initiative coincided with American Heart Month, acknowledging that heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. The program, titled “Heart to Heart Stay Smart,” highlighted important preventative measures. The DC Senior Center demonstrates its commitment to prevention by maintaining an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in an easily accessible location.
Later this month, Comprehensive Health will host a Lunch and Learn session on Thursday, February 26th at noon. Enjoy lunch while discovering the range of services offered by Comprehensive Health. The event is free, but please RSVP by February 19th to secure your meal. You can RSVP by calling or texting Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565, or by signing up at the Senior Center.
There will also be a new program entitled WISE is slated to begin March 2nd and run through April 6th. Wise stands for Wellness Initiative for Senior Education. The Program celebrates healthy aging and educates older adults on a variety of topics, including safe medication use, communicating effectively with healthcare providers and strategies for healthy living. Celebrate this exciting senior stage of life and all the benefits that come with it. During the class, there will be a discussion on risk factors and behaviors to avoid in an effort to remain healthy. Participants will learn about the aging process, how to make healthy lifestyle choices, examine how alcohol, prescription medications and over-the-counter medications may affect seniors differently and how to avoid problems.
As it is said, “We’re never too old to learn something new and none of us has ever been this age before! Join us for this fun, interactive program promoting positive, healthy lives.”
Together, we can learn simple tools to feel more empowered about your health and the healthcare you receive.
This six-lesson curriculum is facilitated by a trained leader, WISE Program instructor Trent Smith. There is no charge for the class, and no limit on class size. The class will meet Mondays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm beginning March 2nd. The final class will be on April 6th. Please confirm your attendance by February 23rd. You may RSVP by contacting Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565 via phone or text, or by registering at the Senior Center.
Although the board is hoping that all the severe weather is behind us, it’s always wise to follow the Darke County Seniors’ Facebook, where cancellations and updates will be posted. The March calendar and flyers can also be found on Facebook or feel free to pick up your own personal copy at the center.
