DARKE COUNTY – With July more than half over, the Darke County Seniors at Birchwood Senior Center have been reviewing the success of recent activities and forging ahead with a full calendar of events for August. Our current officers, Wally Wollenhaupt (president), Mary Rodeheffer (vice-president), Carol Hosbrook-Cole (treasurer), and Denise Palivec (secretary) have made it possible for Darke County Seniors to be as active as they desire.
Bingocize® class enrollment is now closed. This is a “grant-funded” ten-week, evidence-based wellness program aimed at promoting fitness and nutrition to seniors. Classes are bi-weekly and started July 14th and have been relocated to Oakley Place, 1275 Northview Dr, Greenville. Instructors Theresa Kress, Tina McGilvary, and Heather Stith are pleased with the number of participants and their commitment to improving their wellness.
There is still time to RSVP to the Celebrate You Naturally: A Wellness Experience for Seniors, which will be held Thursday, July 31, but you must text or call Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565 by the July 24th deadline.
The August calendar of events is available on Facebook and through your local news sources within the county. Posters will be placed in many public locations by August 1st.

All events, except Bingocize, take place at the Birchwood Senior Center, 8544 Jaysville St. Johns Road, Greenville. All events are open to anyone 55+ who is willing to become a member ($2 annual membership fee). Guests are welcome to experience the center before joining. Please be aware that some events require an RSVP by the specified date indicated with an asterisk (*).

Effective Wednesday, August 6, Line Dancing has been expanded to three hours, offering beginner instruction from noon – 1 pm and intermediate instruction from 1 – 3 pm. The donation remains at $5 for members. Also, on Wednesday, August 6, the Darke County Seniors hold their Monthly Meeting at 3 pm. Anyone interested in volunteering, offering suggestions, or simply curious can attend.
This month’s free movie will be “Blast from the Past” held on Thursday, August 7th at 1 pm. Blast from the Past is a 1999 American romantic comedy science fantasy adventure film starring Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, and Sissy Spacek. The plot is around a man who was born and brought up in a Cold War–era fallout shelter built by his survivalist, anti-Communist father, and emerges into the modern world 35 years later, where his innocence and old-fashioned views lead to comedic situations. Everyone receives free popcorn.
Donations are always appreciated since they are our source of operating expenses. In fact, none of these events could happen without the ongoing donations from civic-minded businesses and individuals. The center/group operates under the Darke County Senior Outreach, a 501(c)(3). Donations are constantly needed to bring quality programs to our senior community.
If you are interested in contributing, please contact Heather Stith at 937-417-2648 or send your donation or pledge directly to Darke County Senior Outreach, P.O. Box 1019, Greenville, OH 45331.
