Darke County Fair Board holds special pre-fair meeting

GREENVILLE – The Darke County Fairboard held a special meeting on August 19, 2026.  All the directors were present except for Director Dean Neff, who was parking campers and was unable to attend.

While the purpose of the meeting was to address last-minute fair preparations, the overwhelming message was one of gratitude and optimism.  Fairboard directors expressed their deep appreciation for the general public’s patience and understanding as they navigate the obstacles created by the unusually high rainfall leading up to the fair.  Camper parking, vendor setup, and the usual preparations have all been delayed by the wet and muddy conditions, but the directors remain positive, saying that they will be ready to open the gates on Friday.

Director Werner explained that the public has been extremely patient and forgiving as the board does everything possible to get campers parked.  Most campers are being parked individually using telehandlers or tractors, and despite the long wait this creates, complaints have been practically non-existent according to Werner.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Melissa Brawley, owner and president of For The Riders Promotions, gave an update on the motorcycle races to be held on August 28.  She reported that this year’s races are slated to be bigger than ever, with payouts exceeding $25,000.  Thanks to sponsorships, entry fees for the youngest age groups have been waived.  The races will also feature two memorial races honoring Tim Best and George Shade.  Race fans should note that the main event start time was misprinted on some materials, but the main event begins at 6:00 p.m.

Director Yount made a motion to move the regular Fairboard meetings from the first Thursday of the month to the second Thursday of the month in order to allow time to have proper financial reports prepared for the meeting.  After discussion, the motion was tabled until the full board could be present to vote on the issue.

Director Moore reported that the Fine Arts department held a successful opening gala with over 100 people in attendance.  He also stated that the box seat waitlist has been updated and will be available in the office for the public to view starting on Friday.

Director Hicks reported that Gate 7 now has coverage and that the Harness Races are set, with over $40,000 in purses and giveaways for the fans.  Hicks also noted that election petitions for Fairboard candidates are due on August 20, 2026 at 9 a.m. Once he has collected them, he will verify the petitions, report them to the Board of Elections, and then publish the list of candidates.

On the topic of the election, President Werner clarified that there is a petition to make a change to the constitution regarding voting methods.  Werner stated that she wanted to make it clear that the petition was not presented by the current board, but was instead submitted by an Agricultural Society member.  She urged anyone who has questions about this issue to speak to a board member for more information.

The board also discussed the rules and regulations regarding service dogs on the grounds.  Service dogs are allowed within the parameters of the law, while emotional support animals are not permitted.

The board also heard from a Junior Fair participant who asked for an exception which would allow them to participate in their department’s livestock show despite missing a deadline.  In a close 5-4 vote, the Board approved the exception and the participant will be allowed to exhibit their animal.

The Fairboard will hold a safety meeting on Thursday, August 20, 2026 at 10 a.m., with a press brief to follow.  Opening ceremonies will begin on Friday, August 21, 2026 promptly at 8 a.m.
