GREENVILLE – In a powerful demonstration of community spirit and small-town solidarity, a group of Darke County business owners and residents completely wiped out more than $11,000 in outstanding school lunch fees in less than half a day, ensuring that every Greenville Senior High School senior can walk across the graduation stage without a burden.
The whirlwind effort began when Ashley Leis of Leis Realty discovered that several local seniors were facing the heartbreaking possibility of not being able to graduate due to unpaid school lunch balances. Recognizing the urgency of the situation with graduation rapidly approaching, Leis immediately reached out to Eric Fee of Tribute Funeral Homes to mobilize a network of local leaders.
What followed was a masterclass in community coordination. Within a mere 10 hours of that first phone call, a dedicated group of local businesses, churches, and individuals rallied together to fully fund the $11,000+ deficit.
“When one of our kids is hurting or facing a barrier, Darke County doesn’t hesitate,” said Fee. “We called on our fellow business owners, and nobody blinked. Everyone just asked, ‘How much do they need and where do I send it?’ That’s the beauty of living and working in a community like this.”
A Connection Across Generations
The Facebook post organizing the drive didn’t just reach local business owners; it also touched the heart of a local resident who lived through the exact same heartbreak decades ago.
An older community member walked into the office with a $100 check, eager to contribute after seeing the call to action online. She shared that when she was a student, she found out the very week of graduation that she owed school dues she had no idea about. At the time, her mother was making just $1 an hour, and there was simply no extra money to spare. While the school eventually agreed to let her walk across the stage, they withheld her actual diploma until the balance could be paid.
Decades later, seeing local businesses band together to make sure today’s seniors wouldn’t have to face that same stress and shame brought her through the door to hand-deliver her support.
