GREENVILLE – The Darke County 4-H program recently held its annual county-wide Public Speaking Contest, highlighting the communication skills, dedication, and creativity of local 4-H members. Participants from various clubs took the stage to present on topics they were passionate about, impressing both judges and attendees with their confidence and poise.
Two club advisors opened the event with inspiring speeches, setting the tone for a day full of insightful and engaging presentations. The event was an excellent opportunity for youth to develop essential public speaking skills and share their experiences and knowledge with the community.
In the advisor division, Madison Werner of the Trails and Tails 4-H Club earned second place for her informative speech on medical emergencies. Her calm delivery and clear explanations reflected a strong grasp of complex and important topics at hand.
Taking first place in the advisor division was Maria Moore of the Crowing Coops 4-H Club with her talk titled The Life of Bees. Maria captivated the audience with her knowledge of bee biology and the vital role pollinators play in agriculture and the environment.
In the senior division, Julia Raffle of the Blue Angels 4-H Club took first place with her heartfelt speech, How 4-H Has Impacted My Life. Julia reflected on her 4-H journey, sharing how the program helped shape her character and revealed her career path.
“I never would have known I loved it unless I joined 4-H,” she shared, inspiring younger members with her message.
Among the Cloverbuds, Owen Hawkins of the Crowing Coops 4-H Club confidently recited the 4-H pledge, earning first place in his division. His proud and enthusiastic delivery drew warm applause from the crowd.
Next, in the junior division was Grant Moore, also from Crowing Coops, who claimed first place with his interactive presentation, 10 Steps to Success for Poultry Showmanship. Grant not only shared valuable tips for show preparation and performance but also brought a live chicken named Carlos to demonstrate techniques in real time — an engaging touch that left a lasting impression.
Ruby Delk of the Trails and Tails 4-H Club secured second place in the junior division for her speech on Horse Body Language. Ruby explained how subtle movements and expressions in horses can indicate their mood, offering a practical and insightful perspective for fellow equestrians.
The contest was a testament to the value of public speaking within the 4-H program, encouraging youth to find their voice and share their passions. Darke County 4-H continues to cultivate leaders who are confident, knowledgeable, and eager to make a difference.
