COVINGTON – The Covington Buccaneers shot second-half lights out in defeating the Arcanum Trojans 82-67 in Buccaneers Holiday Classic first-round play with the BUCCS Brogen Angle setting a new tournament record by scoring 37 points including seven 3-pointers.
“We’ve been waiting for that,” Covington coach, Logan Carey said of Angle’s 37-point performance. “We see it every day in practice and it couldn’t have come at a better time.”
“We did a great job,” Carey added. “We made our runs; we made more runs than they did and that ended up being the deciding factor.”
Arcanum took the opening period 18-15 with Braylen Etherington connecting for nine Trojans points including a trey.
Covington put 21 points on the second quarter board while holding Arcanum to 14 sending the teams to the break with the BUCCS up 36-32. Covington’s Sam Grabeman and Britton Millers each canned two triples good for six points each while Regan Christ was hitting eight second-quarter points including two 3-pointers for Arcanum.
“Regan Christ, when he gets hot there is really no stopping him,” said Carey. “We did a great job, we made our runs, we made more runs than they did and that ended up being the deciding factor
The BUCCS added another 21 points to the board in the third quarter with Arcanum keeping the game close with 19 points for a 57-51 score with three periods in the book. Angle hit 14 points including three 3-pointers for Covington with Arcanum’s Brady Lock accounting for 11 points in the period.
Covington put the game away in the fourth scorching the nets for 25 points with Angle canned another three treys to go along with three free throws good for 12 points, Bryson Hite chipped in nine points including a triple. Arcanum sophomore Regan Christ tallied 13 fourth-quarter points including three 3-pointers.
“We’ve been preaching we want to play up-tempo but we don’t want to play in a hurry,” Carey noted. “The first six games a lot of times we were playing in a hurry. Right now we’re letting our offense work, now they’re seeing this is what our offense is getting us, this is the kind of shots we’re looking for and when we’re patient, those are the shots we’re knocking down. It’s been a learning process but tonight was a big step in the right direction.”
Brogen Angle led Covington and all scorers with a game-high 37 points in the BUCCS win.
