PIQUA – The City of Piqua notifies all residential rental property owners that registration for the Rental Registration Program is opening on February 1. Registration will be available through an online portal on the city website until June 1, 2025.
Dedicated staff within the Community Services Department will be available to help owners complete the application process, if necessary. The program requires registration only in 2025; inspections will begin in 2026.
This program, like many other successful rental programs throughout the State of Ohio, requires owners of residential rental property units to register each of their units with the City annually through an online portal. The registration includes documentation of ownership and confirmation that there are no outstanding code violations on the property.
The Rental Registration Program is designed to preserve and promote the quality of existing rental housing stock in the city.
“The program helps to ensure that rental tenants in the City of Piqua have safe and fair housing opportunities,” said Kyle Hinkelman, director of community services for the City of Piqua. “Our staff are ready to answer any questions property owners or tenants may have about the program or its requirements. We understand that this will be a learning year, and we intend to work with owners and tenants to implement this program throughout the year.”
Beginning in 2026, the City will inspect all rental units as a condition of approval of a rental registration. These inspections, which generally will take one hour or less, will be scheduled ahead of time (Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with the property owner and tenant. Inspections will include a review of a consistent checklist by the code official, which is published on the City of Piqua website. The City will also implement a new Rental Inspection Advisory Committee, which will be tasked with assisting with tenant issues and recommending improvements to the program.
The City will publish a list of properties that have a valid rental license to the City website on a recurring basis.
