DARKE COUNTY – March brings new events to the Darke County Senior Center, including a road trip. If you didn’t catch our earlier articles, you can find them on our Facebook page. We share all event details—descriptions, fees, class capacities, and contact numbers—on “Darke County Seniors” on Facebook.
This month, our sponsor, Greenville Missionary Church, will generously provide a $20 gift card to be awarded via drawing at the general meeting, which takes place on the first Wednesday of each month at 3:00 pm. They will also provide birthday treats at the meeting and refreshments during our main craft activity of the month.
Greenville Missionary Church is located at 1110 N. Broadway in Greenville. The church holds Sunday services at 9:00 am, 10:15 am, and 6:00 pm. Guided by Jesus’ great commission (Matthew 28:19-20), the congregation aims to help everyone who enters their doors come to know Jesus, build a relationship with Him, and experience life transformation through Him. The church actively supports missionaries and mission organizations both across the United States and globally. We appreciate Greenville Missionary Church’s support of Darke County Seniors.
Please note the following upcoming events requiring advance registration and prepayment: Healthy Skin presentation on March 12th (register by 3/5), Family Fun Night & Trivia on March 13th (register by 3/6) Keyboarding 4 dates (register by 3/9), Solar Butterfly Craft class on March 19th at 1 pm (register with prepayment by 3/12) and Road Trip to Fountain City on March 20th at 12:30 pm (register with prepayment by 3/12).
A Keyboarding series comprising four classes will be offered midmonth, designed to enable participants to master the home row, understand finger placement, and develop essential touch-typing skills. Instruction will also include effective proofreading techniques. The class is open to all with no limit on enrollment and no associated fee. Participants are required to bring a laptop running at least Windows 10; the use of a mouse is recommended. Sessions are scheduled Mondays 16th & 23rd 2:00 – 3:00 pm and Wednesdays 18h & 25th 10:30 – 11:30 am. There is no fee for this class, but advanced registration is requested, please RSVP by 3/9.
Join in the fun of creating a solar butterfly lawn ornament. This easy craft can be enjoyed during the day and at night. The solar light adds a cozy touch to a spring garden or patio. The class will be held on Thursday, March 19th at 1 pm and requires an RSVP by 3/12, along with the prepaid registration fee of $5.00.
Did someone mention a road trip? RSVP by 3/13 with your $10 tour fee paid at the time of registration. We will caravan from the Senior Center at 12:30 pm. Our tour starts at 1:30 pm.
Come along as we head to Fountain City, Indiana, to explore the Levi Coffin House—a historic refuge that sheltered over 1,000 freedom-seekers on their way to Canada. You’ll get to tour this well-preserved Quaker home and discover its distinctive features that played a vital role in American history, earning it the nickname “The Grand Central Station of the Underground Railroad.” Today, it’s maintained as the Levi and Catharine Coffin State Historic Site.
The Coffin House has earned national recognition, being listed among the country’s Top 25 Historical Sites by the History Channel. In 2016, the Smithsonian highlighted the Levi Coffin House Interpretive Center as one of 12 new museums worldwide worth visiting, and the Indiana Office of Tourism Development included it among the state’s top museums. Discover for yourself what makes this site so remarkable.
Following the tour of the historic site, we will visit Fountain City Acres, an Amish-style grocery store offering a range of fresh produce, baked goods, deli items, ice cream, candies, jams, and furniture. Please note that only cash or checks are accepted; credit cards cannot be used for purchases.
You’re invited to join us at the Darke County Senior Center on Thursday, March 12th from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm for “Getting to Know You.” Find out about upcoming plans at the center and explore events you might enjoy. It’s a great chance to have meaningful conversations, share your own experiences, meet other attendees, and learn more about both future activities and the wider community. No need to RSVP, we will be expecting you.
Attention Line dancers: No class at the Senior Center on Wednesday, March 18th. Instead, we’ll perform at Final Bow (116 E Third St, Greenville) from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm during Main Street Greenville’s Senior Citizens Day Out. Everyone is encouraged to join in. For those who have not previously participated in line dancing, this is an ideal opportunity to do so. Anticipating newcomers, seasoned instructor Kevin Glueckert has selected dances of different skill levels to ensure an enjoyable experience for all to participate.
If you are wondering how to RSVP, the process remains the same. You can register in person at the center or contact Wally at (508) 789-3884 or Mary at (937) 423-2565, either by calling or sending a text. Kindly be aware that some events require prepayment at the time of your RSVP. If payment is not received, registrants may be removed in order to accommodate others. For any questions about the Senior Center or its events, feel free to contact Wally or Mary at the numbers above.
