COVINGTON – Bradford senior Owen Canan came into the Covington Holiday Basketball Tournament 22 points shy of his 1,000th career varsity point, a milestone that did not come easy as Covington’s pressure defense kept the Roaders struggling for points all four quarters.

With less than three minutes in the fourth, Canan drove the lane to score his 1,000th, and the game was halted to recognize his accomplishment.

The Covington Buccaneers took an early 11-0 lead at 4:46 in the first quarter and pushed its advantage to 15-2 at 3:01 before the team closed out first-period play, with the BUCCS holding a comfortable 17-6 advantage.
The neighboring schools played to a 12-12 second quarter, with Canan scoring eight points in addition to his four first-quarter points. The teams went to the break with Covington leading 29-18 and Canan with 12 hard-earned first-half points.

Period No. 3 was a defensive battle between the teams, with Covington taking the quarter 8-7 and Canan accounting for four points, six shy of 1,000.
A fourth-quarter 2-point basket and two free throws had the Bradford senior with 998 points, and with under three minutes to play, Canan drove the length of the court, scoring on a layup to give him his 1000th career point.

Canan ended the night with 22 points, a good number by any standard, but just another night at the gym for the Bradford senior in hitting his season average.
Brogan Angle led Covington and all scorers with a game-high 26 points, including four 3-pointers.
