Barbara Ann Warvel, age 89, of Greenville, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the Brethren’s Home in Darke County on August 18, 2026. She was born on July 14, 1937, in Stark County, Ohio, to the late Duane and Charlotte Hall.
On April 29, 1956, Barbara married the love of her life, Dorla L. Warvel, with whom she shared a beautiful family and many cherished years until his passing on April 11, 1978. Barb and Dorla first met while attending Bluffton College, where their lifelong love story began. Together they raised four children, and Barbara devoted her life to her family with unwavering love, strength, and creativity.
Barbara is survived by her children and their spouses, Douglas and Dalene (Yost) Warvel, Christine (Warvel) and George Lunger, Dorla D. and Gwen (French) Warvel, and David and Babette Warvel; Barbara was the proud grandmother of ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy. Her grandchildren and their families include: Laci and Octavio Cedeno, and their children, Thalia and Zoe; Mandy Addison, and her children, Ava and Gabe; Kyle and Kari Warvel, and their children, Grady, Sophie, and Henry; Jarryd Lunger; Treg and Abby Lunger, and their daughter, Nora; Tessa and Dan Baker, and their children, Rowan, Daniel, and Samuel; Sadie and Kyle Beachy, and their children, Annie, Abraham, and Archie; Chloe and Christopher Ruchty, and their children, Levi and Beau; Angella Warvel and her partner Shane Urick, and their son, Mason; and Stephanie Warvel; and a brother, Dan Hall.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dorla L. Warvel, her parents, Duane and Charlotte Hall, her sister Joan (Hall) Morgan, and her daughter-in-law, Sherry (Brumbaugh) Warvel.
A life of creativity, devotion, and heart, Barbara—known to many as Barb—was celebrated for her gifted hands and generous spirit. She loved sewing, crocheting afghans, and making stuffed dolls and teddy bears, creating treasured keepsakes for her children and grandchildren. She lovingly sewed wedding dresses for family members who asked for her help, and she continued sewing and crocheting until her hands no longer allowed her to work as she once had.
Barb dedicated many years to caring for others. She worked at The Brethren Home, where she was known for her compassion, loyalty, and gentle care for residents in geriatrics for 27 years. She also worked ten years at the Darke County Home, a long-standing custodial care facility serving individuals with complex medical and developmental needs. Never one to retire, she worked another five years at the Greenville County Courthouse. Her work reflected her deep empathy and commitment to serving others. She always put family and others first.
Barbara was known for a work ethic that seemed to have no off switch. While many people might have looked for the easy way out or found reasons to slow down, Barb simply rolled up her sleeves and got the job done. Whether caring for others, sewing late into the evening, supporting her family, or taking on another job after retirement age, she faced life’s challenges with determination rather than excuses. Her perseverance, resilience, and example of hard work left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
She had a remarkable sense of direction and loved driving the country roads without maps or GPS, always confident in her ability to find her way to events and back home again. Often, she would take the long way just because she could and keep the windows down and just enjoy the ride.
Barbara was a faithful supporter of her community. She could always be found at Ansonia school events, cheering on her children, grandchildren, and every Ansonia Tiger with pride and enthusiasm. Her presence in the stands was a constant source of encouragement and joy.
Her faith was central to her life. She was an active member of the Greenville Nazarene Church, where she served as a song leader, Sunday school teacher, board member, and Vacation Bible School Director. Later, a devoted member of the Ansonia First Church of God, where she found fellowship, purpose, and lifelong friendships. Later in her life, she was a member of the Trinity Wesleyan Church for years.
Barbara leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, resilience, and devotion to family. Her warmth will continue to live on in the many lives she touched, the memories she created, and the handmade gifts she leaves behind as symbols of her care.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, September 3, 2026, at Zechar Bailey Funeral Home in Greenville with Russell Wulber officiating. Burial will follow in Palestine Cemetery, Palestine. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Barbara was a huge supporter of Ansonia Tigers Athletics, and any memorial contributions may be given to the Ansonia Tigers Athletic Department in her memory.
