GREENVILLE – The Greenville Municipal Concert Band returns to the Marling Band Shell in the Greenville City Park on Sunday, June 28. Concert time will be 7:00pm. There is plenty of seating available on park benches, or listeners may bring their own lawn chairs. There is no admission charge for the concert. The band will be under the direction of its associate director, Doug Albright.
This “Welcome Back” concert features a broad range of music that highlights the versatility of the concert band. In addition to traditional marches by Sousa and Fillmore, the band will perform a swinging arrangement of the spiritual, “Joshua Fit The Battle.” The music of the American pop and jazz composer George Gershwin will be featured in “A Gershwin Portrait.” The audience will hear a rendition of the current Bruno Mars hit, “I Just Might,” as well as a medley of tunes by George Harrison. The overture for the evening will be “La Belle Helene” by Jacques Offenbach.
JR Price will be the featured soloist for this concert. Mr. Price began his teaching career in 1986 in the Randolph Eastern Schools. He began teaching in Greenville in 1988, and presently teaches orchestra and jazz band in the district. He is starting his 16th season as the primary director of the Greenville Municipal Concert Band. Mr. Price is an accomplished performer on the saxophone. He will perform the crowd favorites “Harlem Nocturne” and “Yakety Sax.”
