DARKE COUNTY – The Darke County Senior Center was abuzz with a fun craft project sponsored by JAG Healthcare of Union City. Pam Idle shared information about the facility followed by associate Angel who guided participants in creating colorful terra cotta bee baths.
The activity gave participants an enjoyable afternoon and produced cheerful bee baths to brighten decks, patios, or gardens. Marian Eley, one of the crafters, learned about how bee baths are used and shared the following information for our readers.
Worker honeybees perform many important duties within the hive, with each bee taking on a specific role as it ages. Newly emerged nurse bees care for the colony by feeding young larvae, cleaning cells, and tending to developing bees. Guard bees stand watch at the hive entrance, protecting the colony from intruders. Forager bees travel from flower to flower collecting nectar, which is later transformed into honey back at the hive.
Another important group is the water collector bees. These bees search for and carry water back to the colony, where it is used to cool the hive and help maintain the proper environment. Water collectors do not gather nectar, ensuring the two resources remain separate until they are needed.
If you place a bee bath in your yard, remember to keep it filled with fresh water at all times. Adding a few small stones or marbles to the container gives bees a safe place to land while they drink, helping these important pollinators thrive.
August is almost here, and each month begins with a General Meeting on the first Wednesday at 3 pm. The meeting is open to all Darke County Senior Center members, and prospective members are encouraged to attend. Attendees will hear about upcoming events, can review the success of recent activities, celebrate August birthdays with treats from the Church of the Month sponsor and one senior in attendance will receive a $20 gift card.
We are grateful to Solid Rock Apostolic Church for serving as our August Church of the Month Sponsor. Located at 8991 US Route 36 in Bradford, the church welcomes everyone to attend services in person or online each Sunday at 10 am. Solid Rock’s mission is to help people find God, grow their faith, discover their purpose, and make a difference—a mission that extends beyond the weekend experience. Solid Rock will also provide refreshments at our main craft event later in August. We thank them for supporting the Darke County Seniors.

Recently the group was invited to the Brethren Retirement Community for a hot lunch and a tour of the main building, which included a “chocolate walk”. It was well attended, informative and delicious!
Many members attended the first Mystery Lunch, which is a new event and will be held on the fourth Friday of each month, excluding November and December. At least one person figured out the mystery restaurant correctly based on the four clues that were provided. But for most it remained a mystery as they boarded the Greenville Transit. Once they arrived at their destination everyone was welcomed to Beanz Buttercream Bakery and Eatery, where they enjoyed a meal of lasagna and/or chicken alfredo, and a cookie.
The next mystery lunch will be Friday, August 28th. The location will change each month and you will not know where we are going until you arrive. The group will travel by carpool if the restaurant is outside of Darke County but all destinations will take less than 1 hour. Within Darke County you can carpool or everyone will be able to travel together by Greenville Transit. When riding the transit, a form needs to be completed ahead of time. Always bring your Senior membership card because you never know when you might receive a discount by presenting it. Each person is responsible for their own meal, which will be between $10 – 15. Meet at the Senior Center at 11:30am. Clues for this event will be posted in the Senior Center as well as on Facebook. Chair massage reduces stress by lowering cortisol levels and promoting a sense of calm. It also alleviates physical tension in the neck, shoulders, and back, which helps relieve muscle pain and improve circulation.
Or consider trying the mini foot reflexology with red light therapy performed by Shelly Acker. Foot reflexology is a natural practice based on the idea that specific points on the feet correspond to different organs and systems of the body. By applying pressure to these points, reflexology helps improve circulation, reduce stress, promote relaxation, and support overall balance and well-being. Many people find it to be a soothing way to enhance both physical and emotional health
RSVP by 8/04 to attend the “Sleep Well for Better Health” program presented by WISE (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education) on Tuesday, August 11th from 11:30 am – 12:30 pm. Come learn how the science of sleep teaches us how to be our best. There is no charge for this event.
RSVP by 8/06 to hear about this philanthropic group of ladies who call themselves “The Gang of Seamstresses”. On Thursday, August 13th at 1:00 pm come hear the amazing story of how a group of ladies changed lives of cancer patients around the world 1 zipper at a time. In 2018, their first year, they made less than 1000 and last year they made 7000. Please check out the complete article that will be published on Facebook and our media outlets. It is truly amazing what they are doing! There is no charge for this event, however we will have a jar available for anyone who wants to donate to this group of seamstresses. All donations will go to these ladies.
