ARCANUM – Saturday, September 20th marked a milestone at the Arcanum Opera House. This was the first musical performance on the full stage since 1927.
In support of the restoration of the Opera House, the Arcanum Preservation Society held an Open Mic night featuring local musicians. “Pete” Stutz hosted the event along with 7 other local artists sharing the stage. Greg Bogan, Ryan Vititoe, Donovan Brown, Bruce Shank, Tracy Eubank, Marcus Weldy, and Joey Schmitmeyer performed.
The last time the stage was used for a group of musicians was December 7, 1927 when Otto Gray and the Oklahoma Cowboys played the final musical show. One of their most popular tunes was “Midnight Special”, performed by member Dave “Pistol Pete” Cutrell and later remade by Creedence Clearwater Revival. So, Pete Stutz brought music back to the full Opera House 98 years later.
The opera house had a dropped ceiling and an abbreviated stage when it was converted into the American Legion back in the day. You could not see the grandeur of the 28-foot ceiling, balcony, and the fully opened stage until the Preservation Society began its demo for restoration.
