COVINGTON – The Arcanum Lady Trojans defeated the Covington Lady Buccaneers 60-57 in overtime to put the Lady Trojans in the championship game of the Buccaneers Holiday Classic.
Arcanum took the opening period by a single point, 10-9 led by two Brooke Anderson 3-pointers.
The Lady Trojans used a 12-0 run to open second-quarter play with a 22-9 advantage before coasting to a 16-11 second-period count behind seven Alexis Gibbons points sending the teams to the break with Arcanum owning a 26-20 lead. Maggie Anderson led Covington with eight points including two treys.
“Covington is athletic, they are strong, they’re disciplined and fortunately we were able to come out with that big lead,” said Arcanum coach, Abbey Moore. “We were knocking down shots against that zone and then their man-to-man threw that into a little bit of a loop.”
Arcanum was one point better in the third outscoring the host Lady BUCCS 13-12 with Gibbons posting seven points for the Lady Trojans. Gracie Anderson canned two Covington triples in the period.
The Lady Buccaneers battled back to send the game to overtime outscoring the Lady Trojans 17-10 in the fourth setting up an overtime battle.
Arcanum earned the overtime win with an 11-8 extra period of play led by four points each from Caroline Long and Brook Anderson.
“They were huge,” Coach Moore said of Gibbon and Brooke Anderson’s play. “Their leadership shined tonight, their experience came up big and they made big plays when we had to.”
Maggie Anderson led Covington and all scorers with a game-high 25 points. Alexis Gibbons paced Arcanum with 23 points followed by Brooke Anderson’s 22 points.
