HUBER HEIGHTS – Ansonia junior, Matthew Lee broke the Tigers school record of 4:37.2 held by Troy Riegle from 1983 in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:30.34 at the Friday Wayne Invitational meet, breaking his previous high by 11 seconds.
“Matthew has been a model for improvement through hard work,” said Ansonia coach, Allen Newbauer, “running an average of 60-65 miles per week with a high of 75 miles one week in preseason training.”
“On Tuesday he and I do doubles of five miles in the morning at 5 a.m. the six to eight miles in the afternoon at 3:45 p.m. practice,” Coach Newbauer added.
The Wayne invitational is a high-level high school meet for athletes with regional and state qualifications and potential where Lee placed 12th overall in the men’s 1600 with his record breaking time for the Ansonia track and field program.
Lee’s next goal is the break Ansonia’s school record in the 3200 meter run which has stood since 1971 at 10:03.2 held by Terry Carter.
Ansonia travels to Covington this Friday, May 5 for the Covington Invitational where Lee will be taking aim at the 3200 Ansonia Record. Lee just missed the record time by .07 at the April 14th Twin Valley South meet with a time of 10:03.9.
