VERSAILLES – The Ansonia Lady Tigers dropped a 71-51 Prosperity Promotions MLK Classic non-conference game to the Brookville Lady Blue Devils.

Ansonia played without starting guard Rose Barga and saw limited play from Gabby Leaper, who is nursing an ankle.

“Turnovers killed us today,” said Ansonia coach Connor Custenborder. “We have to step up as a team and do better. We got our two main point guards; Gabby Leeper is dealing with an ankle, so you are trying to limit her minutes, and then Rose Barga hyper-extended her knee and will be out for a couple of weeks, so those are the two that mainly handle the ball for us”.     ‘

The Blue Devils were led by 6’1” freshman Jolie Gudorf’s 19 points and 5’8” freshman Kinley Kummer’s 17 points, including five 3-pointers.

The Lady Blue Devils grabbed an early double-digit 22-12 lead after one quarter of play and took period No. 2 stretching their lead to 42-25 at the break.

“Credit to them,” Custenborder. “They played hard; they were in the passing lanes and traps. It’s hard to see over traps, and they did a good job pressuring us.”

Brookville extended its lead to 56-33 with a 14-8 third quarter. Ansonia took the final period 18-15, led by eight London Reichert points, including 4-4 at the line.

“We want London putting the ball in the hoop; we want her getting shots up,” Custenborder stated. “She was our leading scorer by the end of the year last year after the last tournament game so we have all the confidence in the world in her, we know that she can do it, we just need her to have that confidence. She is doing a much better job here of late.”

“Autumn Best is one of the best athletes I’ve seen,” Coach Custenborder said of his freshman guard. “She runs fast, jumps out of the gym, just a crazy natural athlete. She has done a good job this year fine-tuning her basketball skills. She is seeing more and more minutes as the season has gone on.”
