Annie Oakley Shooting competition scheduled

DARKE COUNTY – At least six young Darke County girls will be competing later this month for the title of Miss Annie Oakley in the annual shooting competition at the south end of the Darke County Fairgrounds.

This Annie Oakley Festival competition begins on July 23 with practice for the girls. The preliminaries will be held the following evening while the finals are set for Thursday night, each beginning at 6 p.m.

Among those competing this year will be Laura Wright, 19, and her sister, Rachael Wright, 17, daughters of Clint and Charlene Wright; Isabella Gulley, 17, daughter of Chris Heckman and Christy Gulley; Alia Hunt, 15, daughter of Chris and Dawn Hunt; and Samantha Byersdorff, 18, daughter of Ryan and Teresa Byeredorff; and Grace Dietrich, 14, daughter of Jeff and Tammy Dietrich.

Dennis and Shelley Soward are in charge of this competition, at which there will be the traditional costume judging during the preliminaries on Wednesday night.

The festival will continue from July 26-28 at the same location. Lots of activities are scheduled throughout that time.
