GREENVILLE – Miami Valley Community Action Partnership’s (MVCAP) emergency shelter in Greenville will reopen Nov. 1 with a new case manager and expanded support through the agency’s Domestic Violence Services program.
Operations were paused at the shelter for several months to address facility safety, compliance, and staffing needs before reopening. A wide variety of partners and donors have created a safer, more secure and welcoming environment.
“We recognize the pause has been difficult for the community, but it was important that we address the issues to reopen responsibly,” said MVCAP’s President and CEO Erin Jeffries. “Throughout the pause, our Darke County team has continued helping individuals and families experiencing homelessness.”
The Darke County team continued connecting eligible individuals and families with resources including Rapid Rehousing, the Housing Choice Voucher program and other available housing assistance.
“We have remained committed to connecting individuals with available shelter resources in the region and assessing their eligibility for additional assistance programs,” said Darke County Director Megan Campbell.
A new case manager is scheduled to begin work in mid-October. The shelter will also work closely with MVCAP’s Domestic Violence Services team to strengthen support for survivors of domestic violence and their children.
“The partnership adds expertise to our shelter services,” Jeffries said. “It allows us to better support survivors and their children while continuing to help people seeking shelter in Darke County.”
Campbell also noted the shelter’s capacity has been expanded and a new screening process has been put in place.
Improvements at the shelter have included extensive drywall and painting work, bathroom ceiling and flooring repairs, electrical work, and significant security updates.
Over the summer, Darke County native and NFL star Matt Light led an effort to rebuild the main entrance porch at the shelter with the help of campers from the Light Foundation’s Greenville-based Camp Vohokase.
Other partners and donors include Ansonia Lumber, Warner Construction, Matt Drew Plastering, 3-Way Electric, S&G Painting, Millers Flowers, R&R Lawn LLC, Miami Valley Janitorial, Sherwin-Williams, PLE Security, Charles Geloff Security, Greenville Council 1796 of the Knights of Columbus, the Darke County Foundation, and the Darke County United Way, along with individual donors, community members, and MVCAP volunteers.
“MVCAP is deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to this effort and for the continued support that makes this important work possible,” Campbell said.
Individuals and families seeking emergency shelter or domestic violence services should contact MVCAP’s 24-hour hotline at 937-456-6891. For all other MVCAP programs, individuals and families should contact the Darke County office at 937-548-8143 to discuss needs and available resources.
“We will continue providing resources and assistance as we prepare for the shelter to reopen Nov. 1,” Jeffries said. “We are grateful for the community’s patience and support, and we look forward to serving Darke County for many years to come.”
