SPRINGBORO — Greenville’s varsity boys golf team closed its Miami Valley League championship season with a 15th-place finish at the OHSAA Division I Southwest District Tournament at Heatherwoode Golf Club.

The Green Wave posted a team score of 359. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to the state tournament.

Freshman Harper Kerns led Greenville with an 86, followed by junior Hayden Null with an 87, sophomore Braxton Moore with a 91, senior Brody Weaver with a 95, and junior Hayden Burns with a 96.

“Rough day today,” Greenville coach Brian Stickel said. “Boys were very disappointed in the way they played today. We just didn’t hit enough fairways and enough greens in regulation.”

Despite the disappointing finish, Stickel encouraged his players to focus on a season that included an MVL tournament victory, a share of the league championship and the program’s first district appearance since 2019.

“I told them when we got home to forget about today, but look at what we did this season,” Stickel said. “We set some new records both individually and team-wise. We won the league for the first time since 2004. We made it to districts. Last time was 2019.”

Stickel praised Kerns for staying composed after a difficult start and said Null’s round was hampered by a shoulder injury.

“Harper had a few rough holes at the beginning, but again held his composure and had a nice round,” Stickel said.

Moore, Weaver and Burns also battled through difficult stretches to complete their rounds.

“All three of them had some rough holes, but kept plugging away,” Stickel said. “Again, I am very proud of what this team has accomplished.”
