ST. HENRY – Versailles came up short 34–21 against St. Henry last Friday, September 4, but the Tigers still had important positives to take away from the game.
The Tigers never quit, down 21-0 at the half. “We just didn’t have them ready to go.” Coach Scott Broerman said, “They are well coached; Josh does a heck of a job there and had them ready to go.”
Versailles took their opening possession of the second half and drove 67 yards to cut the lead to 21-7 on a 17-yard pass from Blake Monnin to Kade Schwartz.
“Mission number one coming out of halftime was scoring. Broerman said. “The kids did that; they did exactly what we asked of them there.”
The Tigers would score 21 points in the second half.
The Redskins would increase the lead to 28-7 on a 26-yard run by Drew Langenkamp. The Tigers’ Blake Monnin would be injured, and sophomore Ian Hemmelgarn would take over at quarterback for the Tigers. Hemmelgarn moved the Tigers down the field, aided by two big catches by Alex Westgerdes. Cole Brewer ran it in from four yards out to make it 28-14.
Versailles attempted an onside kick, but the Redskins recovered the ball at the 50. Langenkamp scored on a 50-yard run in a ten-second possession, making it 34-14, as the extra point was no good. The Tigers scored once more as Brett Pulfer scored on a seven-yard run. That held up for the final score of the night.
