Mobile devices keep us connected, informed and entertained, but constantly looking at a screen can become mentally and physically tiring. Taking regular breaks from your phone or tablet can help reduce eye strain, improve concentration and create a healthier balance with technology.
One of the best times to put your mobile device aside is during meals. Eating without checking messages, social media or notifications gives you an opportunity to enjoy your food and have better conversations with family and friends.
Before bedtime is another important time to disconnect. Consider putting your phone away 30 to 60 minutes before going to sleep. This can reduce distractions and help your mind transition from a busy day to a more relaxing bedtime routine.
Taking breaks is also helpful during work or school. After spending an extended period looking at a screen, step away for a few minutes, stretch, walk around or simply look at something in the distance. Even short breaks can give your eyes and mind a chance to reset.
Other good opportunities to disconnect include while spending time with family, exercising, enjoying the outdoors or participating in hobbies. These activities can be more enjoyable when notifications aren’t constantly competing for your attention.
Of course, one of the most important times to stay off your mobile device is while driving. Unless you’re using hands-free navigation or an emergency requires attention, your phone should remain out of your hands so you can concentrate on the road.
You don’t necessarily need to give up your mobile device for hours at a time. A few intentional breaks throughout the day can reduce screen fatigue, limit distractions and remind us that sometimes the best way to recharge ourselves is to put our devices down.
