GREENVILLE — For one unforgettable summer day, downtown Greenville became the happiest place in Darke County.

On Saturday, July 10, 1999, thousands of residents and visitors lined South Broadway to witness the Disney Hometown Parade, a nationally sponsored traveling parade that brought the magic of Disney to selected communities across America.

Families began claiming spots along the parade route hours before the first float appeared. Children wearing Mickey Mouse ears sat on curbs with parents and grandparents, eagerly waiting for their favorite Disney characters to come into view.

Then came the music.

Colorful Disney-themed floats rolled through downtown as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and other beloved characters waved to cheering crowds. Professional Disney performers joined local marching bands, community organizations and area residents in a celebration unlike anything Greenville had experienced before.

For many children, it was their first opportunity to see Disney characters in person without having to travel to Florida or California.

The parade transformed Greenville into a destination for the day, drawing visitors from throughout western Ohio and eastern Indiana. Businesses along Broadway welcomed the increased foot traffic as restaurants and shops filled with families enjoying the festivities.

Community leaders considered the parade a tremendous honor. Disney selected only a limited number of communities nationwide to host the traveling production, making Greenville’s selection a point of pride for local residents.

More than a quarter-century later, memories of that day remain vivid for those who attended.

Children who eagerly waved at Mickey Mouse have grown into adults with families of their own. Parents who lifted youngsters onto their shoulders now share stories of the day Disney came to town with grandchildren.
