Lots Happening with the Darke County Seniors

DARKE COUNTY – There is always lots happening with the Darke County Seniors and much of it occurs at their facility at 5844 Jaysville-St. Johns Road, Greenville.  However, recently the seniors have been involving themselves in parades, festivals, events with Main Street Greenville, and monthly luncheons at local restaurants.

These energetic seniors have been busy decorating a float for the Annie Oakley Parade. Some will ride on the float, while others will walk—or perhaps line dance—along the route! The group will also host a booth at Gathering at the Garst from 10 am to 6 pm Saturday, July 25, and 11 am to 5 pm Sunday, July 26, offering temporary patriotic tattoos for children and sharing information about the Senior Center and upcoming events. They will also display a beautiful 72” x 72” America 250 quilt made by DC Senior Theresa Kress and donated as a fundraiser. The bordered red, white, and blue quilt features the Freedom Eagle with the American flag in the center and is suitable as a comforter or wall hanging.

The DCS Office has received many calls and messages from family members asking how their senior relatives can get involved at the center and what programs are available. This information is shared through local news sources, on Facebook at Darke County Seniors, on the radio, and at many public businesses and libraries.

Getting involved is simple: become a member for $2 per year, register for an event or class, and attend. To sign up, visit the center during office hours, Monday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm; call or text (937) 794-2556; or email darkecountyseniors@gmail.com. Leave a message, and someone will respond. Please note that events with a fee must be paid at the time of registration.

Current members who have not renewed for the 2026–27 year should do so by July 31 to keep their existing membership number.

RSVP by 7/31 for a journey through the changing landscapes of our Darke County Park prairies, from the open tallgrass of Worth Family Nature Preserve to the mixed grasses, wildflowers, and scrub of Shawnee Prairie, to the wooded edges of Eidson Woods Savanna. We’ll explore how fire, bison, and Native American land practices shaped these habitats over time, and what their stories mean for the land we see today.  This event will take place at the DC Senior Center on Friday, August 7th at 1 pm.

RSVP by 8/03 to participate in  a road trip: On the Chocolate Trail.  Those interested should meet at the Senior Center at 1pm and carpool to visit 3 chocolate-related venues: Uranus Fudge Factory, Cedar Coffee Shop, and The Place on Spring Street.
