GREENVILLE – The Sater Heights Park was filled with the sounds of bats cracking and cheering crowds over the weekend as the Greenville Citizens Baseball League (GCBL) hosted its first major tournament of the 2026 season with the 16th Annual Summer Kickoff Bash.

The three-day youth baseball tournament, held Friday through Sunday, featured teams competing in the 8U, 9U, 10U, 12U, 13U, and 14U divisions, bringing players, coaches, and families from around the region to Greenville for a weekend of tournament baseball action.

The Summer Kickoff Bash has become one of the longtime staples on the GCBL tournament schedule, continuing a tradition of providing competitive youth baseball while showcasing Greenville’s baseball facilities and strong community support for the sport.

The Greenville Citizens Baseball League continues to operate through the efforts of its Board of Directors, made up of eight dedicated volunteers who oversee every aspect of the GCBL programs. The board works year-round, organizing leagues, tournaments, field maintenance, scheduling, and countless other responsibilities necessary to provide baseball opportunities for area youth players.

“It brings back memories as a kid, to come out and watch youth baseball,” said Greenville Mayor Jeff Whitaker. “Greenville has around 300 kids playing baseball in the summer, and to bring so many teams out here for these tournaments over the weekends is phenomenal, and to think what it does for Greenville – people coming and staying and going out to eat, it’s just a fun time. This baseball facility is remarkable, with all the ball diamonds and all the kids that come here and play.”

Whitaker also praised the many individuals who have helped build and maintain Greenville’s baseball facilities.

“Daniel Jones and his family took care of the high school baseball field with the artificial turf, and that family has done so much for baseball in this community,” said Whitaker. “Also, Matt Myers and what he does for the community as Superintendent of the Street Department, then alongside, he does all this work for GCBL, I wonder when he gets any sleep.”

Putting together a tournament of this size takes countless hours of behind-the-scenes work by volunteers and organizers.

“There is a lot that goes on in the background, organizing these teams and getting them here,” said Whitaker.

The Greenville mayor said youth sports programs continue to play an important role in strengthening families and communities.

“Any community that has programs for their kids, that keeps them occupied, busy, focused on something positive and off the streets, they’re not going to get into trouble,” said Whitaker. “Take a look at all these kids out here playing, there are hundreds of them, and I would venture to say that very few of them will get in trouble later on in life because their parents are out here with them. These kids are occupied and focused on something physical to do, and I am thankful that I had that opportunity when I was a kid.”

Whitaker also noted the positive economic impact tournaments bring to Greenville.

“You look at the families out here, you bet they’re going to stop and eat somewhere, they are coming in from out of town, staying over the weekend, and it’s great for the economy, but more so it’s great for the community and for their families to come out here and enjoy it,” said Whitaker.

Tournament operations are powered by a large group of volunteers working throughout the weekend.

“I’m here to help, do whatever,” said Matt Myers, a GCBL Trustee. “All the board members help, Brent Short is the commissioner, Matt and Ashlee Brenley, and Brian Westfall have been overseeing a lot of the work on the tournament.”

“Everybody chips in to help,” said Daniel Helman. “We get parents to volunteer and help, we have some of the younger girls in here helping, everybody picks up and makes it happen.”

In addition to the baseball action on the fields, GCBL continued its reputation for providing popular concession stand food and drinks throughout the tournament, including the well-known Winner’s pork chop sandwiches enjoyed by players and fans alike.
