XENIA – The Versailles Tigers punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 with a 64-46 District Championship win over the previously undefeated Williamsburg Wildcats.
Williamsburg entered the district title game with a perfect 24-0 record while Versailles, representing the Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC), brought a deceptive 17-6 mark into the matchup. The Tigers delivered a complete performance, winning all four quarters on their way to the 18-point victory.
“They’re a good team, and you can’t take anything away from them,” Versailles coach Travis Swank said of the Wildcats following the win. “They won 24 in a row — that’s hard to do — so they have some players and everything else. But we played some tough teams and been in some tough environments, and that’s prepared us for this moment.”
Versailles senior Drake Ahrens led the charge, scoring a game-high 29 points and setting the tone early with three first-quarter 3-pointers.
A Blake Monnin layup at the 7:18 mark gave Versailles a 2-0 lead before Williamsburg answered with five straight points to go up 5-2. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Maddox Stonebraker and Ahrens pushed the Tigers ahead 8-5 with 4:11 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Wildcats quickly tied the game with a three eight seconds later, but Ahrens responded with another triple at 2:53 to give Versailles an 11-8 edge. Williamsburg again answered from long range to knot the score at 11-11.
Stonebraker buried his second three-pointer of the quarter at 1:48 to put the Tigers ahead 14-11, but Williamsburg again responded from beyond the arc to tie the game 14-14.
Versailles closed the quarter strong. Monnin drilled a three at the 1:05 mark, and Ahrens followed with a deep triple from the top of the key with 34 seconds remaining, sending the Tigers into the second quarter with a 20-14 lead.
The teams combined for 10 three-pointers in the opening period, with Versailles hitting six compared to Williamsburg’s four.
“We came out ready to go,” Swank said. “We shot the ball extremely well in the first quarter. In this type of atmosphere, you want to come out and hit shots early so you don’t play so tight, and we were able to do that. We played with no fear the rest of the game.”
Defense took center stage in the second quarter. Versailles won the period 12-9, with Ahrens accounting for nine of the Tigers’ points, including his fourth three-pointer of the night. Ethan Wilker also knocked down a three, helping Versailles take a 32-23 lead into halftime.
The Tigers tightened things even further in the third quarter, holding Williamsburg to just five points while scoring 11 of their own to extend the lead to 43-28 heading into the final period.
Blake Monnin scored four points in the third quarter while Ahrens added three. Reed Raterman contributed two points, and Stonebraker added one.
“We guarded extremely hard,” Swank said. “I’m not sure they have been guarded that hard all year long. I’m proud of our effort overall.”
Offense picked back up in the fourth quarter as Versailles closed out the game by winning the period 21-18. Five Tigers found the scoring column in the final frame.
A free throw by Ahrens with 1:40 remaining gave Versailles its largest lead of the night at 62-41 before both teams emptied their benches as the Tigers secured the district championship.
“It’s a great accomplishment to get a district,” Swank said. “You always want to get there and win it. This has to be in our DNA — we’re built for this, we expect it, our community expects it — so we have to go out there and win it and that’s what we did here today.”
Versailles placed two players in double figures, led by Ahrens with 29 points and Stonebraker with 11.
“Drake shot it really well here tonight,” Swank said of his senior leader. “He doesn’t want his season to end — very, very motivated and showed very good leadership this week getting guys engaged and ready to go. We need that Tuesday night from him as well.”
Versailles advances to face Waynesville in regional semifinal action Tuesday, March 10 at Fairborn High School Skyhawk Arena with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
“We’re tested in our league and hopefully we can keep on going,” Swank said.
