TIPP CITY – The Greenville Lady Wave traveled to Tipp City for an early Saturday morning MVL softball game and retuned home with a 9-2 win over the Lady Red Devils to continue to stand alone atop the Miami Valley League (MVL) with a 13-1 conference mark.
“Great win and day for Lady Wave Softball,” said Greenville coach, Jerrod Newland. “Played great defense and had some good hits on the day. Aggressive offense and base running.”
The Lady Wave took advantage of the first of six Tippecanoe errors to score one of two first-inning runs to lead 2-0 before the Lady Red Devils plated a run in the bottom of the first sending the teams to second-inning play with Greenville leading 2-1.
Greenville took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third-inning where the score would stand after five complete after a scoreless second-inning with both teams also putting up goose eggs in the fourth and fifth-innings.
The Lady Wave plated two sixth-inning runs while Tippecanoe was adding a run in the bottom of the inning sending the game to the seventh with Greenville holding a 5-2 advantage.
Greenville took advantage of four seventh-inning run scoring hits off the bats of Haleigh McDermitt, Kylie Hamm, Addie Burke and a home run off the bat of Zoey Burns to close out the game with a four-run seventh and a 9-2 victory.
Burns picked up the win for Greenville pitching a complete game for the Lady Wave allowing one earned run on six hits, one walk while striking out six.
“Zoey pitched tremendous and we played defense,” Newland stated. “Lots of big hits – Zoey hit one over.”
Burns crushed a seventh-inning homerun to go along with 2-RBIs and a run scored. Hamm was 2-2 with a walk and 2-RBIs; Ashlyn Zimmer went 2-3 with a run; Kylar Arnett went 2-3 with a walk, 1-RBI, 1-Run; Burke was 2-4 with a RBI; Haleigh McDermitt 1-1, 1-RBI, 2-runs; Skylar Fletcher 1-5, 1-run; Kendall Cromwell 1-run.
“Tournament trail becomes clear tomorrow,” Coach Newland said of the Sunday OHSAA tournament draw. “We are very excited for our path to Akron.”
The win gives the Lady Wave a 2023 sweep of Tippecanoe with an earlier 8-1 MVL win over the Lady Red Devils. With the Saturday morning road win Greenville advances to 16-4 overall and 13-1 in the Miami Valley League play.
